„Minature with Saint Clare”
6-13 August 2016
by Barbara Bodziony
Saint Clare of Assisi was the most beloved spiritual daugther of St. Francis. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition. As a young girl she was fascinated with St. Francis way of life. The fascination turned into a deep connection with St. Francis, who became her spiritual guide.
The iconography of St. Clare paires her often with her spiritual father. In portraits St. Clare is usually shown in the habit carrying a book and a lamp. The lamp refers to her name, which means pure in latin. She can also have a white lilie which refes to her virginity. She is portrayed sometimes as an abbesse carrying a crozzier.
As her feast day falls on Friday during our stay at Monteripido we are going to take this opporunity to make a miniature depicting this popular Italian Saint.

Medieval illuminating workshop
„Minature with king David”
13-20 August 2016
by Barbara Bodziony
A psalter was one of the most popular and more often copied manuscripts during the Middle Ages. Each monatic community was supposed to have at least one copie of it. Every day, not only clergymen and monks, but also many ordinary christians prayed Psalms. Psalters were most commonly owned. Many psalters were lavishly illuminated with full-page miniatures as well as decorated initials. One of the most important initials was the «beatus» initial from the very beginig of the Psalms: «Blessed is the Man(…).» (Ps 1). This first letter was often given the most elaborate decoration in an illuminated plaster. Typically the first big letter B shows David, a composer of the Psalms, playing some musical instruments: harp, lyre or bells.
During the workshop we are going to paint a bautiful initial B with king David playing music. You can write next to the miniature some verses from your favourite psalm (for those who know calligraphy) or at least one verse that we will put next to your work.
